A five-mile stretch of Interstate 84 will close late Saturday night through noon Sunday, July 13-14 while crews work to remove graffiti and trash along the busy highway.
The freeway will be closed in both directions to rail and highway traffic between interstates 5 and 205 at about 11 p.m. Saturday. Travelers should make plans now to use alternate routes including Interstate 5, Interstate 205, surface streets including Sandy Boulevard, Glisan Street and other east/west routes, as well as Interstate 405 which will be the I-5 detour on the Portland side of the closure.
The closure is a coordinated effort by six agencies: ODOT, Union Pacific Railroad, TriMet, the Portland Bureau of Transportation, and Metro and Multnomah County. More than 100 workers from the six agencies are expected to be part of work crews.
During the closure, all ramps to and from I-84 between I-5 and I-205 will also be closed.
Traffic on I-5 northbound will be diverted onto I-405 north as crews will also be working on the Marquam Bridge during the closure. The Morrison Bridge and North Weidler Street ramps to northbound I-5 will remain open.
TriMet MAX Blue, Green and Red Line trains will be disrupted during this time between the Gateway/NE 99th Ave Transit Center and NE 7th Ave to allow crews to access the right of way. Shuttle buses will serve closed stations during the disruption. Visit TriMet.org/alerts for more information.
Portland city-owned bridges that cross I-84 including the Earl Blumenauer Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge will close at times as crews will be working under them. Signs will direct travelers to alternate crossings over I-84.
ODOT crews will also do other maintenance work including electrical repairs and sign maintenance, pavement patching, and drain cleaning on I-84.
For real time traffic information during the closure, go toTripCheck.com. This work is weather dependent, and the schedule may change. However, forecasts are calling for clear skies and mild overnight temperatures limiting the possibility of a rain delay.
Ramp from eastbound Capitol Highway to Barbur northbound closes Monday for 6 weeks
The ramp that connects Southwest Capitol Highway to northbound Barbur Boulevard will close for approximately six weeks beginning Monday, July 15. Southbound access from Barbur Boulevard to Capitol Highway remains open.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation is closing the 66-year-old bridge to remove and replace failing concrete on its deck.
A similar closure happened in 2018 when a hole appeared in the deck and concrete fell onto Barbur Boulevard which travels underneath.
The closure will start early Monday morning and last all hours and days until the work is completed. The full closure includes all users including bicyclists and pedestrians.
Detour routes for travelers heading to northbound Barbur Boulevard include Southwest Bertha and Terwilliger boulevards.

More road closures in Washington Park
The Washington Park Reservoir Improvement Project is entering a new phase that will require additional local road closures within the park through November 2024. This is in addition to existing closures in Washington Park.
- Madison Drive - walking and biking trail is closed for paving until October.
- SW Sacajawea Boulevard - closed to all traffic July-October.
- SW Sherwood Boulevard - will be closed to all traffic beginning in September and lasting until November.
Detour routes will change as work progresses; traffic signs, and flaggers will direct travelers around the closured areas. Use caution and follow all instructions when passing through the area.
