A 3-alarm fire ripped through a pallet-recycling business Thursday, causing significant damage but no injuries, Portland Fire & Rescue said.

Firefighters responding to reports of a large smoke column in the sky arrived at the property on Northeast 47th Avenue, near the Whitaker Ponds nature refuge, shortly after 7:30 p.m. on July 4. They encountered tall, stacked wooden pallets ablaze, meaning flames reached up to 30 feet high, according to the fire bureau.
