A trans girl won a race at Hayward Field during the state championships, but most readers who wrote in seemed to agree her name was not central to coverage of the underlying debate.Nik Streng/The Oregonian

When I wrote last month about how The Oregonian/OregonLive handled news regarding a trans girl athlete at the state track and field championships, more than 75 readers wrote in response.

In my column, I explained why readers did not see coverage of the event and why we chose not to identify the 15-year-old athlete by name in later articles. By far, readers who responded agreed the name was not central to the underlying debate of how competitions should handle trans athletes.
