A man shot himself to death in Southeast Portland Wednesday after firing at police and a woman who was driving nearby, police said.
The Portland Police Bureau said the officers and the woman were not injured in the shooting.
The incident started around 3:45 p.m Wednesday when the man fled an attempted traffic stop by police officers near Southeast 92nd Avenue and Taylor Street, police said. The officers later found the man outside his parked car near Southeast 88th Avenue between Taylor and Main streets.
The man, whose name hasn’t been released, ran again from the officers, and he shot at them with a semiautomatic handgun. The officers did not return fire and called for backup. The Police Bureau said the man also fired at a woman who was driving past him on the street.
The man ran into Berrydale Park, where he shot himself as police surrounded the park, according to the Police Bureau. The man was driven to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries.
