The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for thunderstorms for much of the Willamette Valley to the east until Wednesday morning at 8 a.m.

The lightning that can accompany thunderstorms, combined with dry conditions and winds, create “critical fire danger” in areas, the Oregon State Fire Marshal said in a tweet Tuesday afternoon.

Portland has a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms into early Wednesday. The thunder chances are highest over the central Cascades and some of that activity may move westward into the valleys.

Fire danger is high as vegetation is dry after a long string of hot days.
