Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers have engaged in discussions for a contract extension for months, but negotiations have stalled.
The wide receiver’s patience has run out and he has formally requested a trade, according to a report on Tuesday from Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. The report added the 49ers have not engaged in a new round of talks since May, which led to Aiyuk skipping the team’s mandatory mini camp in June.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, teams have inquired about Aiyuk’s availability, but the 49ers have no intention of trading him.
Aiyuk, 26, is coming off a career 2023 season in which he caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. He wants a big-money, long-term contract extension similar to what other wide receivers have signed during this past offseason. Detroit’s Amon-Ra St. Brown, Philadelphia’s A.J. Brown and Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson have each signed deals worth an average annual salary of at least $30 million. Miami’s Jaylen Waddle has a deal with an average annual salary of $28.3 million and Philadelphia’s Devonta Smith signed a deal worth $25 million each year.
A first-round pick (No. 25) in the 2020 NFL draft, Aiyuk is set to make $14.124 million in 2024, the fifth and final year of his rookie contract.
The wide receiver has undoubtedly noticed the team giving running back Christian McCaffrey a record-setting two-year, $38 million contract extension and they gave wide receiver Jauan Jennings a one-year deal worth up to $15.4 million.
