Two of the largest hospitals in Portland will severely restrict the number of surgeries they perform in late November and December due to a shortage of anesthesiologists that officials expect will persist through the end of the year.

Providence Portland Medical Center in Northeast Portland “will only be able to accommodate emergency and OB (obstetric) cases” from Nov. 22 through Nov. 26, states an internal Providence memo obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive. “This may need to be extended for a week or two after the Thanksgiving holiday as the recruitment situation is very dynamic.”
