Readers respond: Environmental benefit of no-buy year

Letters to the editor

The article on the trend of a no-buy year made great financial sense, but missed pointing out ecological and relational benefits, (“More people make ‘no-buy year’ pledges as economy worries catch up to them,” July 7). Unnecessary consumption is fueling our many ecological crises, such as climate change, mining that despoils beautiful and sacred land, and plastics in the ocean. Relationally, wasteful overconsumption steals from our descendants and those in less affluent areas.

Yes: Stop unnecessary buying, and you’ll feel lighter and happier.
