Scientists discovered a cave on the moon, and there may be hundreds more

On Monday, a team of Italian scientists revealed their discovery of a cave on the moon in a study published in Nature Astronomy.

The newly-discovered cave is located at the Sea of Tranquility, near where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their famous steps in 1969. The scientists told the Associated Press they suspect there are other such caves, formed from collapsed lava tubes.

The researchers believe there may be hundreds of lava tubes on the moon as well.

The cave discovered by the scientists is estimated to be at least 130 feet wide.

Scientists said the cave findings suggest a way to shelter future astronauts.
