Silvia Xiong, 21, was clubbing with her friends in Southeast Portland early Sunday morning when police said dozens of bullets were fired nearby in a drive-by shooting on Southeast Ninth Avenue that killed one and injured a teen.

Xiong didn’t hear the shots over the music at the Sandy Boulevard sports bar Jackie’s, but she saw the commotion after returning to the area near her parked car around 1:30 a.m.

She and her friend Jasmine Nguyen found the area completely taped off by police, and they eventually had to get a ride home.

Later on Sunday, Xiong and Nguyen drove back to the Buckman neighborhood to retrieve Xiong’s car. Nguyen said she wasn’t fearful and plans to come back to the area next weekend. Xiong said the violence will remain in the back of her head, although she also plans to come back next weekend, too.

“I’ll have to think twice,” she said.

Both examined the damage to Xiong’s sedan. One bullet went through the left passenger door. Another lodged near the fuel door. Something else, possibly a third bullet, appeared to pierce the driver-side window, fragmenting the glass.

Other bullet marks pocked a nearby building, exposing white concrete behind black paint.

Blood, gauze and a medical bag also littered the area as visitors just down the street at the Jupiter Hotel carried on, unaware that anything had happened overnight.

Police said a preliminary investigation suggested a person or people fired from a moving car toward a group on the sidewalk in the 100 block of Southeast Ninth Avenue just south of East Burnside Street.

“Dozens” of bullets were fired, police said. But it’s unclear if they all came from the car. Several parked cars were also struck, police said.

Police said they haven’t made any arrests and that no suspects were on the scene when they arrived after 1:11 a.m.
