A suspected drive-by shooting on Southeast 9th Avenue just south of East Burnside Street early Sunday killed a man and injured a teenager, police said.
Police said they believed a person or people fired from a moving car at a group on a sidewalk in the 100 block of Southeast 9th Avenue. Two people were injured around 1:11 a.m., and “dozens” of bullets were fired, police said. But it’s unclear if they all came from the car. Several parked cars were also struck, police said.
Ambulances took the two injured people to a hospital, but the person police described as an adult male died. The other person, a 17-year-old boy, is expected to survive, police said.
Sunday’s killing marked the 38th suspected homicide in Portland so far this year. At this time last year, when the overall number of homicides had fallen from record highs set in 2021 and 2022, Portland had recorded 46 homicides.
No suspects remained at the scene, and police have made no arrests, they said.
Police ask anyone with information about the shooting — who has not been interviewed by police — to contact Detective Jeff Pontius at Jeffery.Pontius@police.portlandoregon.gov, 503-823-0433, or Detective Steve Gandy at Stephen.Gandy@police.portlandoregon.gov, 503-823-0449 and reference case number 24-168326.
